'He doesn't understand why he was hit. Everything is 'why'.'
The mother of a 12-year-old autistic boy who suffered an attack described by police as a "nasty" sectarian hate crime said he is now afraid to leave home.
Speaking to Belfast Live, she said: "It could have been anybody's kid. The boy who hit him was 16-plus. Samantha continued: "The football team question had to have been about Rangers and Celtic, it's the only thing I can think of. Living in the Fountain estate, I have three boys and we don't allow football tops at all because it's not worth the trouble.
She added: "He doesn't understand why he was hit. Everything is 'why'. He's going to meet a police woman to give a statement with a special needs person, they're going to have a specialist because they're trying to get it in his own words because Alexander can't speak properly.Asked about her son's physical injuries, Samantha said: "Alexander was treated for concussion. His eye was swollen. He has to go back for another x-ray.
“Police are treating this attack as a sectarian hate crime, and I would urge anyone with information on this attack to bring it forward to the police.”
