Rebecca Downes had taken the battery to her room to charge it because she wanted to keep 'an eye on it', an inquest heard
A safety warning has been issued about the dangers of e-bike and e-scooter batteries after a mum-of-four died when a fire broke out in her bedroom.
During an inquest, in which it was heard Rebecca died from multiple injuries sustained in the fall, fire investigator Michael Anglan spoke of the dangers of damaged or poor quality batteries. He said: "Over the past few years we have been getting lots and lots of these types of fires, not just in Lancashire but across the country. When these batteries fail, they fail very rapidly.
On May 15, 2023, fire crews rushed to a house in Exchange Street, Accrington, after an e-scooter caught fire and caused devastation to a house. Fortunately there were no injuries but the occupants were unable to return home after the blaze left the property uninhabitable. CCTV evidence showed it was less than three minutes between the fire starting and Rebecca leaving the bedroom by the window, but she suffered 60 per cent burns during that time.
