A large fire at a mulch yard Sunday just off Interstate 45 in Montgomery County covered local hospitals in smoke and closed the highway’s feeder road.
The fire broke out at Living Earth Mulch, just south of State Highway 242, around 1 p.m. and spread to about 6,000 cubic yards of mulch. Firefighters tried to use three Conroe fire hydrants, but they were defective, according to the Montgomery County Police Reporter. Montgomery County Precinct 4 Commissioner James Metts’ wildlands fire crew helped firefighters with a bulldozer and excavator to move mulch and help expose the flames.
“We’re gonna be here for awhile,” Metts said. “This thing is a large pile and it’s going to take awhile to extinguish it.” Officials said it’s possible the I-45 feeder road is closed throughout the night. They were concerned the smoke could affect workers and patients at three nearby hospitals.
