The Rockets were left to again consider what could have been.
With two more points, the Rockets could have had a win. With two more rebounds, Schröder would have had the first triple-double of his career, the Rockets’ first since John Wall last March.
That left him to consider his other mission. Schröder has said he expects the Rockets to win games, but he also expects to guide them, to help them become better than the team he joined after the trade deadline. “I just try to come here and lead,” Schröder said. “I see Jalen Green, I see all these young guys, doing a great job, working on their craft. I just try to get in there and show them what I experienced the last nine years. I think we made some strides the last couple days, weeks. We just have to keep going. I think we have a lot of potential.
The Rockets were determined to surround their young players with role model veterans. Gordon is a fine influence with work habits that are unfailingly professional, but he is quiet. D.J. Augustin, who was a similar professional before he was released after the trade for Schröder, also is a lead-by-example type.
