worker opened fire at a Brooklyn subway station after being threatened by what police are calling an emotionally disturbed man. Police said he approached two fare collection agents Tuesday at the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center station. He was allegedly acting irate and threatening to fight them.
Investigators said he followed the agents onto a southbound R train and continued to verbally attack them. Authorities said the workers got off at Union Street to prevent further confrontation, but the man followed them onto the platform and past the turnstiles. "The MTA worker pulled out his firearm while repeatedly giving verbal commands for the male to back up. The male failed to comply and threatened to forcibly remove the firearm from the MTA employee. During the course of this interaction, the MTA employee fired one round, which struck the male in the chest," NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kapur said."EMS transported the 39-year-old male to Methodist Hospital, he's currently listed in critical condition.
The MTA said the fare collection agent is a 21-year veteran on the job. He's among more than 270 armed workers who assist other employees while the MetroCard vending machines are being worked on.
