During a heated Good Morning Britain exchange, Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride
A Conservative MP refused to say when women affected by the pension age hike will find out if they'll finally get compensation during a discussion on Good Morning Britain.
The Government faces calls to announce a compensation scheme, with campaigners saying one victim dies every 13 minutes on average. Pressed by Ed Balls on Good Morning Britain on what happens next, Mr Stride said there were "strong feelings" for and against awarding compensation, which could cost up to £10.5billion.
And Mr Stride told the Today programme: "I'm not going to put a precise time limit on it, but we do need to look at these things very carefully." Pressed on whether a compensation scheme would be set up in the next six months he said: "I'm not a genius that you're trying to coax me into nailing down a precise timeframe on it."
The PHSO said it is now taking the "rare but necessary" step of getting Parliament to intervene because of the "scale of the impact of DWP's maladministration" and the urgent need to put it right. But the Government is yet to formally respond.
