Camping in public could become illegal in Mount Vernon as city leaders consider an ordinance banning homeless people from sleeping on streets, sidewalks and other public spaces.
City Attorney Kevin Rogerson told KOMO News his office is still drafting the language of the proposal but any ban would require the availability of shelter to be enforced. During a City Council committee meeting earlier this month, police said they were looking for another public safety tool to address community complaints and also to help connect homeless people to available services.
Mount Vernon has reserved shelter space at the Skagit First Step Center in Burlington as one alternative to people sleeping in doorways or pitching tents in public. Rogerson said the city also has a motel voucher program, and space is available at Friendship House and through some local churches for overnight stays.
Rogerson said his office is working to craft the camping ban ordinance now but there is not set timeline on when it could go back before city leaders for a vote.
