Mount Laguna is expected to accumulate upwards of one foot of snow by early Tuesday from the Canadian storm that blew ashore Sunday night and gained strength on Monday, producing snow, rain, sharp winds and unusually cold air, the National Weather Service.
Forecasters estimate that areas from the coast to the inland valleys will end up receiving from 0.25 inches to 0.50 inches from the latest storm, which might be followed by another system early next week. Most of the rain will flow into the sea, weakening coastal bluffs along the way. A sustained period of rain caused a large rock slide to occur at Blacks Beach in La Jolla on January 20.Concerns about Monday’s inclement weather prompted five school districts in rural and mountainous areas in East County to cancel classes Monday, and plan late starts for Tuesday.
The closures affect students attending Julian Union High, Julian Union Elementary, Mountain Empire Unified, Spencer Valley and Warner Unified, the county Office of Education announced.
