Prosecutors, defense lawyers and attorneys for victims' families and witnesses are barred from saying anything publicly that is not already on public record. Limited details came from court documents which allege a link to Bryan Kohberger and DNA evidence found on a knife sheath, as well as cellphone data.

Kohberger, who is accused in the brutal murders of college students Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin in Nov. 2022, has not entered a guilty or not guilty plea. Public defender Anne Taylor told the judge their client “Authorities allege Kohberger orchestrated and carried out the deadly attack and then returned to work pursuing his Ph.D. in criminology before making a cross-country trip home to Pennsylvania with his father, where he was arrested.

It's still possible that the trial, expected to last six weeks, could be delayed or moved to a different location.If found guilty, Kohberger faces a maximum 10-year sentence on the burglary charge and four consecutive life sentences or the death penalty for the first-degree murder charges. Fines up to $200,000 and payment of $20,000 to the victim's families are also possible.
