Attorney Lee Merritt, who is representing the family and watched the camera footage, says that Hernandez did not charge at the vehicle and that their lives were not in any danger. “Stephen Ramos committed a crime on June 3 when he shot without provocation or without a proper justification into a vehicle full of children,” Merritt says.
Espinoza says Hernandez didn’t know how to cope with the murder of his older sister Naveah, who was killed on May 10. “I’m not saying my son’s a perfect little boy. He was going through something very heartbreaking, his sister was just murdered. He was grieving it in his own way,” Espinoza says. “So I wasn’t doing bad as a mother. I had him out here in the system as a runaway.”
