New figures show that 57 per cent of stolen car cases in Scotland are never solved
Crooks are not being brought to justice in more than half of Scotland’s car thefts, the Daily Record can reveal.
A freedom of information request revealed that 57 per cent of all car thefts during 2021-22 did not result in criminal proceedings. “To cut crime and ensure cases progress effectively through the system, the government must protect the policing budget, enhance community policing and give officers the resources they need to do the job.”
Top news stories today Police Scotland defines detected crimes as those “where there exists a sufficiency of evidence under Scots law to justify consideration of criminal proceedings”. The car theft statistics come days after it emerged that the force is to cut jobs as it faces a projected budget overspend of £19million.
The force is planning to reduce the number of staff but aims to maintain the same number of rank and file officers. It led to criticism from the trade union Unison, which said there are not enough staff to meet existing demand.
