Premier Scott Moe says he understands doctors concerns, adding the province is trying to alleviate pressure on the system.
The Saskatchewan Medical Association released a report Wednesday showing dissatisfaction among doctors has increased since 2020, while many also feel their voices haven’t been heard.
It stated the increased workload has led to many doctors contemplating major changes in the next two years, with 36 per cent of family physicians and 30 per cent of specialists reporting it’s very likely they’ll reduce their work hours. “That they are contemplating or aspiring to retire is a sign of real and serious dissatisfaction with their practices and overall well-being,” the report stated.
“Getting that surgical backlog under control is deeply at risk, with the potential loss of service hours and doctors,” he said. “Even if none of those are surgeons, it’s the family doctors who do the pre-ops, it’s the family doctors who identify that need in the first place. It’s the radiologists who do the scans.”
Further, the province has launched a recruitment plan and added more nursing seats to post-secondary schools. It’s also aiming to reduce the surgical backlog overtime through third-party providers.
