The current Clean Slate law automatically seals convictions for low-level misdemeanors and summary offenses after a person has been offense-free for at least 10 years. Delozier and Harris – who introduced the original Clean Slate law - both touted the original bill as providing a second-chance to move on from those collateral consequences. They said the new bill would provide even more deserving people a chance at a better life.
The total number of felony cases under the expansion will likely be less than misdemeanors as there are significantly fewer felony convictions than misdemeanors each year. These records include affidavits of probable cause that outline what police allege the person did, court filings, transcripts and other public records that provide insight into how the criminal proceedings played out.
