Quest Diagnostics, a major U.S. laboratory, recorded a 25-year high in those who have been injured and then tested positive for cannabis in their system.

Following a wave of states legalizing adult-use cannabis, there has been a growing link between on-the-job accidents and positive cannabis tests, according to data released Thursday by Quest Diagnostics.

The testing data showed that people who tested positive for cannabis in their system after an accident increased to 7.3% in 2022, up from 6.7% in 2021. That itself represents a 9% increase, and was the highest level seen in 25 years. Katie Mueller, a senior program manager focusing on cannabis safety at the National Safety Council, said in a statement that state legalization of the drug creates new challenges for employers.“The Quest data provide compelling evidence that increased use of cannabis products by employees can contribute to greater risk for injuries in the workplace,” Mueller said.

Quest Diagnostics also reported that the overall positivity rate in the combined U.S. workforce for all drugs remained flat in 2022 at 4.6%, based on more than 9 million urine drug tests.
