“It makes myself more proud than what I was my freshman year,” McDowell said. “I feel more confident in my abilities now. I’m really glad I had people to lean on. I’ve overcome a lot of things and I’m just happy to accomplish the goal I really wanted to accomplish since I was a kid.” “I know it was frustrating at first, but at the same time it was when her injury really flared up,” Villemez said. “In some ways, it wasn’t as bad of a thing to not be eligible because she’d have tried to push through and compete, and it would’ve been hard to not make it worse. So being ineligible really kind of took the pressure off.”McDowell’s back still hurt the start of her junior year, but the pain became easier to deal with.
“It was how nice everybody is here,” she said. “It’s really enjoyable to have people who care for you. It’s nice to see people go out of their way to make sure you’re OK. Coach is always really positive in the pool, and I really enjoy that positivity we have. I’m looking forward to seeing what the program will do in the next few years after I move on, just because of how positive the school itself is now.
McDowell’s goal this season is to get back to state in the relays and earn a berth to state as an individual in the 100 backstroke.Whatever she accomplishes this season, and odds are it will be stellar, McDowell has a future in Oklahoma she is looking forward to. One she has earned.
