Rochester, N.Y. — The tragic loss of a Syracuse police officer and an Onondaga County Sheriff's deputy over the weekend is being felt across the extended law enforcement family. Members of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office gathered Monday to honor those fallen officers, who were shot and killed in the line of duty Sunday night, according to authorities.
Monday's ceremony also recognized all law enforcement members who have risked their lives in the line of duty. In some instances, Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter says it was only by the grace of God these officers were able to be recognized.Police said the pair of law enforcement officers killed in the town of Salina Sunday night were shot to death after encountering an armed man while approaching a suspicious vehicle.
Baxter says he has already been in contact with Syracuse police to offer support following Sunday's tragedy. The 33-year-old suspect involved in the shooting has also died, according to authorites.
