St. John’s United Church of Christ in Mokena commemorated the 100th anniversary of its building’s construction by opening a pair of time capsules which have been sealed in the sanctuary’s cornerstone.

Planning the event was a multigenerational effort, with committee members ranging in age from 40 to 91. Dave Kropp and Helen Warning were the oldest members, with Kropp providing family photos from the construction of the church.Items from the 1987 time capsule including an old issue of the Southtown Economist and a commemorative plate.
Going off old records and a crack in the brick, the committee opened the wall of the tower hoping to find the time capsules last fall, and came up empty-handed. After locating the newer box with the metal detector in May, it was Vainowski who recalled the original capsule had been buried beneath it and eventually chiseled it out from.The Rev.
