Mohammed Sami, Camden Art Centre, review: Saddam Hussein’s propaganda painter portrays a world unravelling
The artist’s beautiful paintings draw on snatches of memory from his early life in Baghdad in the 80sMohammed Sami is an artist of atmospheres. His paintings are confections of texture, colour, shadow and space – moody and suggestive.
Born in Baghdad in the early 80s, as a teenage prodigy, Sami was recruited to paint propagandist murals for Saddam Hussein’s regime. In private, he pored over Islamic miniatures. His months spent in Sweden as a refugee were a period of creative freedom that extended into studies at art schools in Ulster and London.refers to this rebirth. It is also the title of a small painting of an aeroplane window, the thick plastic frame forming a “0” looking out onto golden light.
While he does not paint scenes of warfare or violence as we might understand them from the evening news, Sami’s work is informed by his early life. His paintings draw on snatches of memory, sensation and intuition – how a shaft of light sliced through a room, the scuffed texture of a wall, shadows cast by empty clothes or splaying electrical wires. As a painter, he is a poet rather than an essayist – insinuating rather than illustrating.
