Mobile’s independent Crescent Theater has been through some ups and downs over the years, but operators say this is really the end.
The Crescent Theater Film Society, the nonprofit organization that has helped fund and operate the single-screen theater in recent years, made the announcement Wednesday afternoon via social media:It is with great sadness we announce the Crescent Theater will be closing at the end of the month.
The Crescent, at 208 Dauphin St., would have celebrated its 14th anniversary on Halloween. Founded as a bastion of film projection, it eventually switched to digital equipment but continued to feature a slate of films that were mostly independent, critically acclaimed, or extremely quirky. “Vengeance” is now playing, with “See How They Run” starting Sept. 16 and the Brad Pitt action film “Bullet Train” listed as “Coming Soon.” The calendar also lists an Oct. 6 presentation of the horror classic “Nosferatu” performed with live soundtrack by the Texas ensemble The Invincible Czars; whether that event can be rescheduled or relocated remains to be seen.
The Film Society’s message said that “if a suitable affordable location can be found,” the Crescent might resume operations elsewhere. Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
