MLB will host a 2024 regular season game between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, to celebrate the Negro Leagues and Willie Mays.

“I can’t believe it. I never thought I’d see in my lifetime a Major League Baseball game being played on the very field where I played baseball as a teenager,” the 92-year-old Mays said in a. “It has been 75 years since I played for the Birmingham Black Barons at Rickwood Field, and to learn that my Giants and the Cardinals will play a game there and honor the legacy of the Negro Leagues and all those who came before them is really emotional for me.
A number of baseball legends are among past players who have played at Rickwood Field, including Mays, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Satchel Paige, Honus Wagner, Ernie Banks, Larry Doby, Frank Robinson and more, according to MLB.
In addition to the Giants-Cardinals game on June 20, a Minor League game between the Montgomery Biscuits and Birmingham Barons will be played June 18 at Rickwood Field. The Barons play one game each season at Rickwood Field to honor the organization’s history at the stadium, which served as the team’s home during three different periods .
