Hinchcliffe Stadium in Paterson, N.J., is under consideration to host an MLB Field of Dreams game. The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox played in the inaugural game in Dyersville, Iowa, in 2021.
But it didn’t take long for the kid — now 64-year-old Larry Doby Jr. — to understand why those hometown memories gripped his dad, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
“We are delighted by the overwhelming fan response to our event in Iowa, and we hope to highlight other special locations with rich baseball traditions in the future, as we have since 2016,” MLB said in a statement. An artist's rendering of how Hinchliffe Stadium is projected to look after its $94-million renovation, which is scheduled to finish in the fall.
“With all due respect to the Field of Dreams in Iowa,” Sayegh said, “that was a movie set. This is real life.” Hinchliffe, which sits at one of the highest points in Paterson and overlooks the Great Falls, “instantly transports you back to history and makes you understand what it meant for a Negro League baseball team to play and perform at an architectural masterpiece like Hinchliffe Stadium. It’s so unique,” Leggs said.
