We’re a month away from the MLB Draft, which will feature a special class. What names will be called when the Pirates, Nationals, Tigers, Rangers and Twins announce the first five picks? JimBowdenGM ranks the top 25 prospects:
You’ll notice that 20 of my top 25 prospects in this ranking are position players. Keep in mind that in the actual draft, several more pitchers will be drafted in the top 25. However, based on history, the risk that comes with drafting pitchers in the top 25 lessens my appetite for taking them that high. It seems that for every three pitchers drafted in that range, one will live up to expectations, one will get hurt and one will regress.
Here’s how I rank the top 25 prospects in the 2023 amateur draft and what stands out about their respective skill sets. Jim Bowden’s scouting grades are based on the 20-80 scale, in which 20-30 is well below average, 40 is below average, 50 is average, 60 is above average and 70-80 is well above average. PWR denotes Power; FLD: Fielding; FB: Fastball; CB: Curveball; CH: Changeup; SLI: Slider; SF: Splitter; CTL: Control; CMND: Command.
