Rodriguez often felt ostracized growing up in New Jersey. "When I got older, I realized, 'Wait, there's diversity in other places?'" she tells Lee. Still, she had her mother and grandmother to turn to for beauty assistance and inspiration. In her preteen years, Rodriguez's mom used to style her hair in single braids and cornrows. But one day, she decided to take matters into her own hands and grabbed a stray hot tool from her grandmother's drawer of beauty supplies.
In high school, she started traveling to New York City to get involved with the ballroom scene. "I saw so many beautiful faces and extravagant personalities and really deep-rooted, soulful individuals who were like myself, especially women who were like myself.
