Wednesday night turned into Thursday morning at this epic baseball match.
CLOSE The Bulldogs will now play Vanderbilt after defeating LSU in the longest SEC Baseball Tournament Wednesday. Mackenzie Salmon, Clarion LedgerThree SEC Tournament games had already been completed at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Nobody knew how long it would be before the fourth and final one finished.
The first pitch Halter saw from LSU pitcher Ma-Khail Hilliard was a curve ball. He took a cut and sent it rolling up the middle. The Mississippi State fans who remained at the Met rose to their feet. They saw Foscue gunning for home. At 3:03 a.m., Halter accomplished what he thought he couldn't. He ended the longest game in SEC Tournament history with an RBI single that gave fourth-seeded Mississippi State a 6-5 victory over fifth-seeded LSU .
The stadium had an electric atmosphere long before Halter hit the game-winning single. It was raucous for the duration of the six-hour, 43-minute game. Players like senior outfielder Elijah MacNamee put paper Gatorade cups over his ears, and others suctioned them over their eye sockets. One Mississippi State player was even wrapped up like a mummy by his teammates during one of the extra innings.
State left two aboard in four-straight innings, the second through the fifth. The Bulldogs scored two runs in those frames to take their 4-0 lead, but the total could have been much higher. After the blast, LSU had control of the game. The mood at the Met was that the Tigers would find a way to win, probably before extras. Mississippi State senior pitcher Cole Gordon swayed the flow of the game back into the Bulldogs' favor by pitching five scoreless innings in the ninth, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th. He had eight strikeouts.Lemonis visited Gordon on the mound in the top of the 13th. Gordon only needed one more out to finish the inning. After a brief discussion, Lemonis left.
Still, Mississippi State managed to tie it up in the bottom of the 16th on a fielding error by the Tigers' second baseman. None other than senior center fielder Jake Mangum was the player who hit the chopper in Brandt Broussard's direction.
