A Coast Guard commander said that the missing sailboat carrying a Pa. native through the Pacific Ocean could have encountered 20-foot waves or higher when the weather turned bad earlier this month.
The missing sailboat crew that includes a Pennsylvania native could have encountered bad weather off the coast of Mexico that created 20-foot waves, according to a U.S. Coast Guard official.that the Ocean Bound, a 44-foot fiberglass boat that has not been heard from since leaving Mazatlan, Mexico, on April 4 bound for Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and then San Diego, might have seen waves even higher than that in the stormy weather.
Higgins said that the weather got worse on April 6 and that swells and 30-knot winds, or 44 miles per hour, in the Pacific Ocean could have generated big waves. In a Facebook post on April 14, Mark Argall, Kerry O’Brien’s brother, shared a statement from the families that said that cell phone pings from April 4 show they were off the coast of Mazatlan calling marinas in Cabo San Lucas.
