HWDT keeps records of whales, dolphins, porpoises, and basking sharks off the west coast of the country. It has recently published a digital catalogue of minke whale sightings from across the last three decades, including photographs. Minke whales are also a target for commercial whaling in countries such as Iceland and Norway, with the whales hunted there believed to be from the same population as those identified off the Scottish coast. However, their movement patterns are not fully understood yet.
