Minions: Rise of Gru shows Gru's childhood proving himself as a supervillain, but the ending reveals another Despicable Me prequel is still needed.
Gru as a fledgling supervillain is certainly fun to see in Minions: Rise of Gru, but its ending proves another Despicable Me prequel is still necessary. Finding out how Gru started with his lovable minions, seeing his first dastardly inventions for world domination, and knowing more about his childhood in the '70s is all part of the world-building of the Despicable Me franchise, and Rise of Gru delivers on all counts.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The Rise of Gru features a talented cast including Steve Carell, Alan Arkin, and Michelle Yeoh, and sees Gru develop from a feisty young boy who uses cheese rays to cut in line at candy shops and licks double-decker cones of ice cream in front of gym rats into a savvy supervillain adolescent. It comes at the cost of discovering that meeting his antiheroes isn't all it's cracked up to be.
There's more that could be done with Gru's backstory, particularly how his personality evolves from that of a giddy child into an antisocial supervillain, and how he uses his friendship with Wild Knuckles to become an even better leader of the minions. Gru might not have made it into the Vicious 6, but Wild Knuckle's guidance is certainly formative in teaching him that bad guys need help from their friends.
What Still Has To Happen Between Minions & Despicable Me? Minions has become the new Shrek, with the little quirky characters commanding one of the most famous animated franchises in recent years, so it's not surprising that they're front and center in Rise of Gru.
The Minions can have at least one more sequel to Rise of Gru that will cap its trilogy, one that involves a brazen Gru trying to balance things like prom and a summer job with bank robberies and art heists. This prequel to Despicable Me can show why all of Gru's dastardly dreams don't come true, and why he turns more and more away from the public eye in order to obsess over his greatest evil triumph.
