Troops from the 11th Airborne Division take to Norway for more training in the Arctic Shock exercise.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - This week, a group of soldiers from the 11th Airborne Division are in Norway, continuing their arctic warfare training by participating in the Arctic Shock exercise.

Now, just weeks after hosting their own exercise, the Arctic Angels are taking their turn to travel, visiting another arctic partner to continue perfecting their performance. “Almost squeezing every little bit that you can out of the winter, I mean that’s what we’re expected to excel in so you got to maximize the time when you have those conditions,” said Lt. Col. Jonathan Peterson of the 11th Airborne Division.

Just like the JPMRC, paratroopers will have jumped into action, this time however it’s a seven plus hour flight the over the North Pole. The flight simulates a response to conflict in northern Europe which would otherwise be a much more difficult task without Alaska. “It speaks to the strategic importance of you know the geography up here and where we are,” said Peterson.

The JPMRC on the other hand was a large unit exercise. But, small unit operations are something the U.S. doesn’t focus on as much. A big part of Arctic Shock, much like any exercise with our allies, will be learning new techniques for operations. Once again, focusing on improving small unit operations.
