Report counters narrative of risingCLEVELAND, Ohio -- Fewer 911 calls, fewer arrests and fewer guns seized. That’s the current snapshot of crime in Cleveland based on a midyear reported published this week by the city’s Division of Police.
According to the report, there were 3,764 arrests in first six months of 2022, on pace to end the year well shy of the average of 10,435 over the last three years. Arrests on weapons charges are down 51 percent compared to the first six months of last year, and 49 percent fewer guns were confiscated.
Yet not all crime is dropping in uniform. Property crimes might see upticks this year after a decade of decline. And there are 53 open missing persons cases this year, compared to an average of 3.6 during the first half of each of the last three years.and The Plain Dealer reached out to the police division and Mayor Justin Bibb’s office to make sense of the numbers and did not receive a response.
