Outside groups spending lots of money bashing whomever they oppose and the candidates standing back saying, “I cannot control what they say.” This allows the candidate to run a very negative campaign and avoid responsibility.
Utahns, like most other Americans, do not like outsiders coming in and telling us what to do; however, this is how current congressional campaigns are conducted. Candidates, whether they are the incumbent or not, go everywhere raising money to pay for slick advertising campaigns that allow them to avoid any discussions of the issues. They simply attack their opponent.
There was a time when Ronald Regan and Tip O’Neil could disagree with each on most everything, but they still liked to share old Irish tales and invoked the adage “we agree to disagree” respectfully.
