College football no longer stops the clock for every first down, and Day thinks it's hurting OSU's offensive output. But do his public comments play into Michigan's best strategy?

UM has banked five 10-win seasons since hiring Harbaugh since he arrived in 2015, and all five teams played keep-away at an elite level. None of them ranked lower than 22nd nationally in average time of possession, and their average rank was 10.8.

Oddly enough, that disparity hasn’t held during either of Michigan’s wins over Ohio State. The Buckeyes won the time of possession in 2021 and 2022 despite losing both games. In fact, Ohio State has only been out-possessed during one of Day’s six career losses . He’s already dropping hints, and you can bet the Wolverines are listening. If the new clock rules are Ohio State’s enemy, they are also Michigan’s friend. Even if, as Michigan defensive end Aiden McGregor told reporters last week, the Wolverines are still finding their own rhythm without first-down stoppages.

“It’s gonna take a little bit of getting used to. But with our offense, it’s kind of nice because you go out there and give it your all, come out, get a break, but sometimes you’re itching to get back in. The biggest thing for us that we keep telling each other is make every snap count because we’re only going to get so many.”
