We chat with the incredible Michelle MacLaren about her approach to directing the first few episodes of AppleTVPlus' ShiningGirls, and how rewarding it is to collaborate with Elisabeth Moss:
Apple TV+ continues their trend of providing high-brow entertainment with their latest limited series, Shining Girls. The psychological thriller premiered on the streaming service April 29 and is based on the 2013 best-selling novel by Lauren Beukes. Newspaper archivist Kirby Mazrachi is at the center of the story. She was brutally assault years before, but she cannot remember much about her assailant.
Michelle MacLaren: Well, there was a few things. Shining Girls is a mix of genres, so I pulled on things from All The President's Men to Se7en and Zodiac to Michael Mann's The Insider, which is a very voyeuristic one. Elisabeth Moss is amazing as Kirby and such a grounding force for the series, especially as the growing sense of unreality creeps in over the course of the first few episodes. What was it like working with her and collaborating on making Kirby such a strong character?
She has to go from this incredibly vulnerable character to this incredibly powerful and confident character. And a talented actress like Lizzie just does it in such a mind-blowing way. It's it's pure joy working with her.
