From opinion columnist elviadiaz1: Mexico is the biggest spoiler of this week's Summit of the Americas that President Biden is hosting in Los Angeles – and that's not going to end well.
Unless, of course, the Mexican president stops the caravan – something he might not be in a rush to do in the midst of his feud with Biden.
That feud was already overshadowing the summit’s goal, which is to forge better relations with Latin America and the Caribbean.” and that it was disrespecting the “countries’ sovereignty the independence.”“We just don’t believe dictators should be invited. We don’t regret that, and the president will stand by his principle,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.
But this is where I’ll give the Mexican president a bit of a wiggle room. Why does Biden only has a problem meeting with these brutal Latin American regimes but not with others, like China, for instance? But if the United States is serious about “repairing relationships” with Latin America – and together face the hemisphere’s political and economic problems – then it must not ignore the region’s dictators.
Again, why take the higher moral ground only with brutal Latin American regimes but not with others? We know why. The U.S. can’t easily bully financial giants like China.
