A Mesquite man faces felony and misdemeanor charges for allegedly breaching the US Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection in 2021.
Wearing a Trump-branded sweatshirt, blue jeans and a red hat, Anderson repeatedly riled up the crowd by speaking into a megaphone and urging them to occupy the Capitol, authorities said.“It’s time to go,” Anderson said in a video obtained by the FBI. “We’re occupying the Capitol. Let’s go!” He later climbed a statue outside the Capitol, authorities said.
Anderson eventually scaled as staircase directly outside the Capitol before breaching the building with other rioters, according to prosecutors. Confronted by several police officers, Anderson was in the building for less than a minute. After he left he gave several speeches on the grounds of the Capitol, which were restricted to public access.
He also gave an interview where he identified himself by name and encouraged viewers to follow him on social media, authorities said, in which he also admitted breaking into the Capitol.“We can take back our country whenever we want,” Anderson said in one video. “We can take back the Capitol building whenever we want. We can take back all of Washington, D.C., whenever we want. And the police can’t stop us. It’s true that we do back the blue, but they can’t stop us. We pushed right past them.
Four days after the insurrection, the FBI received a tip containing the video where Anderson identified himself by name. Reviewing other videos and pictures taken at the Capitol, FBI agents confirmed Anderson’s participation in the insurrection, according to authorities.The FBI interviewed Anderson at his home in Mesquite. He admitted to being in Washington on Jan. 6 and trying to access the Capitol but said he was knocked to the ground before being able to do so, according to court documents.
More than 1,100 people have been arrested in nearly all 50 states for their alleged participation in the riot, according to the FBI.
