Riley Williams' attorney argued that she was not a key figure in the riots, as prosecutors portrayed her, but someone who embellished her role. “She wanted to be somebody,” the attorney said.

Williams’ lawyer conceded that the prosecution can prove two of the charges: it is undeniable that Williams was caught on video participating in the Jan. 6 riots, both outside and inside the Capitol.

“She wanted to be somebody,” Ulrich said. “She wanted to be noticed. Don’t go down the rabbit hole — she didn’t walk out of Nancy Pelosi’s office with the laptop. [But] after the government’s closing, you would have thought she organized the entire thing.” “If you tell someone to break the law and how to do it, you are assisting, furthering and encouraging it,” Dalke said. “She told them what to do and how to do it and they did it and did it how she commanded. She committed a crime.”

“She never said she wanted to stop the certification of the election. She never talked about hurting [Vice President Mike] Pence or Pelosi,” before Jan. 6, Ulrich said. In elaborating on Williams’ intent, Gordon talked of how Williams used her technological know-how to conceal her communications from investigators.
