There have already been more U.S.-wide measles cases reported in 2019 than all of last year.
An employee for Alphabet’s Google GOOG, +0.05% who visited the company’s Silicon Valley headquarters earlier this month has reportedly been diagnosed with measles.
“We have been working with the Santa Clara County Public Health Department and they would like us to share this measles advisory, which contains information on measles, exposure risks and actions to be taken,” he wrote on April 13. He assured that “this note is just a precaution,” and directed fellow “Googlers” to visit the Center for Disease Control’s page on measles for a list of FAQs, or to speak with their primary-care provider.
The potentially dangerous and highly contagious virus was eradicated from the U.S. in 2000, but there are now 555 confirmed individual cases of measles in 20 states this year as of April 11, according the CDC. It notes that the majority of people who get measles are unvaccinated, as the measles vaccine is 97% effective. Travelers with measles often bring the disease into the country, and the virus spreads when it reaches communities where groups of people are unvaccinated.
Public health officials have blamed the rise on more parents opting not to vaccinate their kids on the spread of anti-vax information online, which the medical community largely considers to be misinformation. Infectious diseases experts at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases , which is part of the National Institutes of Health, reported on Thursday that the decline in measles vaccination is causing a preventable global resurgence of the disease.
