It’s a day to celebrate the legacy of Popovich, whose work in Cleveland and beyond helped boost the careers of Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Cheap Trick, Miles Davis, Ronnie Spector, Ian Hunter, Meat Loaf and many others.
The Plain DealerCLEVELAND, Ohio – July 6 is officially a day to honor one of Cleveland’s late great musical figures.
“Mr. Popovich is an inspiration to all who know and love him,” Mayor Bibb wrote in a certificate commemorating the day, which would have marked Popovich’s 80th birthday. “He has shared his wisdom, time, love and experience with those around him. His many contributions to his community and family are commendable and deserve recognition.”
Popovich’s impact on the music industry reached beyond Cleveland. A native of Pennsylvania, Popovich moved to Cleveland in the late 1950s where he got into music and became the bassist for local band the Twilighters. Popovich founded Cleveland International Records in 1977. The label released “Bat Out of Hell,” helped revive the career of Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Ronnie Spector and is still thriving today under the leadership of Steve Popovich Jr.
