Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle open up about adolescent scars, embracing motherhood, and saying goodbye to their beloved series.
, it’s ending with a similar haunting sense. The show’s co-creators and stars, who at age 34 play 13-year-old versions of themselves living in the year 2000, have decided toafter two seasons. “What I’ve said is the most creatively fulfilling thing in the entire world is also the most draining,” Konkle says of the pair’s decision to end the series. “I need a break.” But true to the nostalgic nature of the show, its brain trust is having a difficult time letting everything fade to black.
Later in our conversation, Konkle stumbles upon an apt, if strange metaphor for concluding the foremost project of her life. I ask about her initial hopes for. “This doesn’t have to do with anything,” she replies, “except that I had a dream last night that I woke up and there was a monkey in my hotel room.” Erskine begins laughing. “That’s terrifying!”
Maybe Konkle and Erskine are having trouble getting the metaphorical monkey off their backs because of the challenges they faced filming the final stretch ofepisodes. The production was forced to shut down in 2020, with only seven days of shooting left. “It was really odd, coming back into this fragmented production,” Erskine remembers. “Your perspective has changed, but you’re still telling the same story that you set up to tell a year ago.
Konkle and Erskine first met as NYU undergrads studying abroad in Amsterdam. They conceived of the show a decade ago, imagining it initially as a broad comedy. “As we got older, trying to stay 100% invested in this seventh-grade storytelling meant telling it through a more mature lens,” Konkle explains.
