The world champion appeared to be cruising to victory until Sunday’s race was red-flagged with eight laps remaining following a second heavy downpour of the day.
Alonso was all over the back of Verstappen after the restart but the Dutchman clung on to equal the wins mark set by Red Bull predecessor Sebastian Vettel in 2013. Verstappen had been forced to fight his way back earlier in the race after finding himself in the unusual position of trailing despite starting in pole after the first deluge of rain hit Zandvoort on lap one.
