Dozens of people have died and officials have warned the death toll could rise as emergency authorities continue to combat wildfires engulfing Maui and other counties in Hawaii.
Ed Sniffen, director of the Hawaii Department of Transport, said at a news conference at 8 p.m. local time on Aug. 9 that 11,400 people had been flown out so far. He added that 600 others were expected to stay overnight at the airport in order to leave on the next available flights.
American Airlines said it expects to operate all of the scheduled flights to and from Maui on Aug. 10 and has added an additional flight to help with the evacuation. Also, customers whose travel plans are affected by the wildfires can rebook without fees, cancel or receive a refund. A wildfire burns in Kihei, Hawaii on Aug. 9.
