About 40 years ago, a 21-year-old woman moved to Dallas and started volunteering. She hasn’t stopped. And those who know her say Dallas is better for her work...

Longtime civic leader is credited with saving the AT&T Performing Arts Center and helping DFW Airport weather COVID.

“In a time when so many people are questioning our valued and critical institutions, it is reassuring to find people like Matrice who have a long legacy of stepping up to volunteer and invest so much of themselves to make our city a better and more equitable place,” prior award recipients Tom Dunning and Pete Shenkel wrote in an endorsement. Dunning nominated her for the award.

“If this institution had failed, it would have been devastating for Dallas,” Dunning and Shenkel wrote about the arts center. Matrice Ellis-Kirk is the recipient of the 93rd Linz Award, one of the oldest and most prestigious civic honors. Ellis-Kirk said she has focused on education, art and community in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Pictured at her home in Dallas, on Friday, June 10, 2022.

Ellis-Kirk led her first advocacy campaign in grade school, when she protested a rule against girls wearing pants. She won.
