San Antonio firefighters battled a two-alarm fire at a historic building downtown on Feb. 24, 2022.San Antonio firefighters have been battling a two-alarm fire after a blaze broke out at a historic downtown building late Wednesday night, Fire Chief Charles Hood said.
Crews were called to 500 Urban Loop, near Cesar Chavez Boulevard at about 11 p.m. for a fire that started in the vacant two-story building. When they arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke. Firefighters attempted to fight offensively but were quickly driven out of the"dangerous" structure, Hood said. Crews were forced to battle the flames from the outside due to several collapses inside the building.
Hood said the historic building had sat empty for several years and that homeless individuals have been known to hang out inside. Crews did not find anyone inside during their initial search and no one has been reported missing.Ken BrancaCold weather created challenging conditions for the firefighters as overnight temperatures stayed barely above freezing. Hood said they set up a rehab center with hot chocolate and soup to help keep the firefighters' body temperatures up.
