The coveted “Apple Ballot” endorsements could influence a set of Democratic primaries with crowded fields and plenty of undecided voters.
Maryland’s largest teachers union on Tuesday endorsed candidates for three open seats in Congress, backing state Sen. Sarah K. Elfreth in the 3rd Congressional District, Baltimore County Executive John “Johnny O” Olszewski Jr. in the 2nd District, and Del. Joe Vogel in the 6th District.
The MSEA, which represents 75,000 union members in the state, highlighted the three Democrats’ records on education-related issues, including combating gun violence, expanding mental health services for students and supporting efforts to hire more teachers. The National Education Association, which represents 3 million members, echoed MSEA’s recommendations.
“In a time when some extreme politicians are focused on banning books and taking away learning opportunities for students,” Pringle said, “these leaders have partnered with parents and educators to ensure students can get the one-on-one support they need, keep students and educators safe from gun violence, expand school-based mental health programs, and address educator shortages.
