Former Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, who was let go after overseeing the nation’s worst offense last season, is joining Maryland’s coaching staff as an analyst.

The much-maligned former Iowa offensive coordinator is joining Maryland’s coaching staff as an offensive analyst, according to multiple reports.

SOURCE: Maryland is expected to hire Brian Ferentz as an analyst for the Terps. The 41-year-old, a former Patriots assistant, spent a decade at Iowa working as the Hawkeyes OL coach and later OC. Hed also coached TEs, RBs and QBs there. Pat Harty first reported the move.Ferentz, the son of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz, was the Hawkeyes’ offensive coordinator for the past seven seasons after initially join his father’s staff as offensive line coach in 2012.

After the Hawkeyes scored just 17.7 points per game in 2022, a clause was added to Ferentz’s contract that the Hawkeyes would have to average 25 points per game in 2023 for him to keep his job. The Hawkeyes never came close, finishing the season with only 15.4 points per game as they finished dead last in the FBS with only 234.6 yards of total offense per game.

That said, Ferentz was a well-regarded offensive line coach at Iowa before his promotion to offensive coordinator. He also has experience working in the NFL, serving as the New England Patriots’ tight ends coach in 2011. As an analyst, Ferentz will work in a behind-the-scenes role at Maryland with Josh Gattis entering his second year as the Terrapins’ offensive coordinator alongside head coach Mike Locksley.
