Pensioners who don't currently receive Pension Credit - and their loved ones - have been urged to check if they can get it, as it could be the difference between getting hundreds of pounds of support this winter

Pensioners and their families have been called upon to verify eligibility for Pension Credit, which could be crucial in securing additional financial support this winter. An estimated 800,000 older people are not claiming Pension Credit - despite being entitled to it.

As the winter approaches, its significance is heightened due to the fact that Pension Credit not only augments the income of the less affluent pensioners but also grants them access to Winter Fuel Payments of up to £300. This follows a contentious move by the new Labour Government to restrict Winter Fuel Payments exclusively to Pension Credit recipients or those receiving other means-tested benefits, thus becoming a necessary condition for energy bill support.

Relatives and acquaintances of the elderly are also encouraged to provide assistance in checking for potential entitlements to additional benefits, as awareness is reportedly low, while many could qualify. This advice comes at a pivotal time when energy bills are expected to increase in October and may rise again in January, reports Birmingham Live.

Mr Lewis expressed concerns regarding the policy change stating: "While there's a strong argument for ending the universality of Winter Fuel Payments, eligibility is being squeezed to too narrow a group. Those just above the thresholds will be hardest hit." He went on to say: "The Government also has a huge moral imperative to ensure the 800,000+ people eligible for Pension Credit who don't get it are informed, educated and helped through the process. It is planning an awareness-raising campaign, but it needs to ensure that reaches every corner.
