Certain prepayment meter customers could start saving a huge chunk of money this weekend with one simple trick
It comes as the price cap will change dramatically from Saturday. Bills will drop by 17 per cent on average but will depend on how much electricity you use.
However, if you're on an electricity-only traditional prepayment meter, you could start saving money as soon as possible with one simple trick, according to the money-saving expert. Customers will have to be strategic about when they top-up their meter this weekend in order to make the most savings.Appearing on The Martin Lewis Podcast, Mr Lewis said: "The people who will make the biggest savings are high users who have electricity and gas.
He added: "Anyone who is on prepayment meters and specifically anyone with a non-smart electricity prepayment meter - this does not work for gas, this does not work if you're on a smart meter - it has to be a non-smart electricity prepayment meter. Now, on those prepayment meters the way your meter knows that the rate you pay is going to get cheaper is because you top it up - that's when it gets cheaper.
"So what I strongly suggest you do in that circumstance is you do not top it up this week, unless you really need it and need to top up, in that case keep it minimum. You use whatever electricity you've got this week...and then on Saturday, even if you do not feel you need a top up you go on top up by the minimum amount - a quid, two quid.
