This week is WorldBreastfeedingWeek! Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is one of the most effective strategies for preventing ChildMortality. We look back at a fine-scale geospatial analysis of the prevalence of EBF across Africa from 2000–2017.
. Specifically, for each polygon-level observation, we randomly sampled 10,000 locations among grid cells in the given polygon with probability proportional to grid cell population. A grid cell was assigned to a polygon if its centroid fell within the geographic boundary. We performed-means clustering on the sampled points to generate a reduced set of locations to be used in modeling based on the-means cluster centroids.
The first four covariates were included as measures or proxies for connectedness and urbanicity, as EBF is typically found to be different in urban areas compared with rural locations. HDI—a composite indicator of key aspects of development —was chosen based on previous studies relating country development to EBF.
