Straight through the Ribble Valley
United Utilities has submitted a major planning application to replace the Haweswater drinking water tunnel system, which runs from the Lake District through Lancashire to Greater Manchester.
Proposals include earthworks, new tunnels, new bridges and haulage routes in a loop north of Clitheroe and the A59, connecting with existing roads and rural villages such as Waddington and Newton in Bowland. A Ribble Valley Council planning report said the Newton-in-Bowland site would be required for around seven years, with an expected start this year. A permanent valve house structure with infrastructure is proposed to remain there once work is done.
In Clitheroe, a compound is planned for an existing car park near the Ribblesdale cement works and also an HGV lorry-holding facility in the cement works.
