President Donald Trump’s plan to create a Space Force got a frosty reception at a hearing Thursday on Capitol Hill, as Republican and Democratic senators voiced skepticism.
West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin said he was “having a really hard time understanding why we need this other agency.” The Senate Armed Services Committee’s criticisms included Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Jack Reed’s point that Space Force looked like it would be a “very top-heavy bureaucracy,” given it’s expected to have about 1,000 headquarters staff for a total force of 16,500. The Marine Corps has only 1,200 headquarters personnel for an overall force of 246,000, Reed said.
