A 16-year-old referee from Manchester has detailed the worrying climate young referees are facing every weekend, with many deciding to walk away from the vocation.
The Manchester FA, the association William officiates under, and charity Ref Support UK have both offered comments on the letter, which vividly unpacks the abuse William and his colleagues face and touches on how he believes certain safety protocols are in fact making life more difficult for them."A referee is an official who watches a game or match closely to ensure that the rules are adhered to and to arbitrate on matters arising from the play.
"The problem of the abuse towards referees stems from the top, from the best leagues, teams and players in the world. During the World Cup in Qatar, it wasn’t uncommon to see world-class players, the likes of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, shouting at the referee in an ultimately futile attempt to sway their decision.
"During the 2022/2023 season, two men in the North-West of England were handed bans totalling thirteen-and-a-half years for assaulting a referee. The details published on the FA website are understandably sombre, describing one referee being strangled and another being punched in the back of the head.
"Unless players and incidents like this are punished more harshly, referee abuse will continue, the steady decline of referee numbers will continue and the World Cup 2038 Final will have a spectator in the middle due to no referees being available."Abuse not being reported
